HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA!

Dear Fellow Chamber Members:

HAPPY BIRTHDAY AMERICA! As you are reading this we are preparing to celebrate our nation’s 234th birthday. America is still the greatest nation on earth. I urge you to take this opportunity to thank God for the freedom we enjoy and to ask for his blessings on our country, our state, our community and our soldiers.

June was a very busy month for our chamber. I want to thank Donna Richardson and Brenda Ellison for doing a great job in helping to organize our chamber golf tournament. Over 60
golfers participated and we raised over $4,000. A special thank you goes to Gary Carver, Roger Arbuckle and John Kirkpatrick for organizing the 5k run in conjunction with the Longest Day of Play. Despite the sweltering heat 62 runners competed in the run. This event raised over $1,000 for the chamber. I never want to overlook Dorothy and Judy for their efforts in any event we have. If you didn’t have the opportunity to volunteer at one of these events don’t fret; the major fundraiser of our chamber is the Kentucky Deer Classic and we will need several volunteers to work throughout the day on Saturday August 28th.

The speakers for our July meeting will be Kevin McClearin, Chief District Engineer for District Two of the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, and Ted Merryman, Interstate 69 Coordinator. Kevin will be discussing the road plan for Muhlenberg County and Ted will address the progress of I-69.
As most everyone is aware, Muhlenberg Community Hospital has been asking for support in the creation of a taxing district for the hospital. The hospital contacted the chamber to see if we would allow the petition to be placed in our offices. The chamber board met with representatives from the hospital to address areas of concern. The board voted to place the petitions at each office and also voted to support the creation of the taxing district.

I had the opportunity to address the Kiwanis Club of Madisonville last week. They invited me to discuss our chamber and the events in which we are involved. It was an honor to represent you and to speak about our chamber. As I told the members of the Kiwanis Club, WE BELIEVE the best is yet to come.

Sincerely,
David L.Richey
President

Dear Fellow Chamber Members:
May was another good month for our chamber. Our monthly meeting was well attended and on May 17th we had the opportunity to recognize our high school students who participated at a state level competition this past school year. The teachers, sponsors, school administration and students were very appreciative of us hosting the reception.
June is a very busy month for our chamber and in our county! Check this out:

• The county fair is currently underway at the Ag Center
• Eddie Miles will be performing on Friday Night June 4th in downtown Central City
• James Best will be at the Merle Travis Center on Sunday June 6th at 2:30 p.m.
• Chamber golf tournament will be held on Thursday June 10th at the Central City Country Club immediately after
our monthly meeting (it’s not too late to enter your team or sponsor a hole)
• Skyfest will be held at the airport with activities starting at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday June 12th. Our chamber will sponsor the 5k run that evening with registration beginning at 5:30 p.m. and the run will begin at 6:30 p.m.
• Saturdays on the Square begin June 26th with a tribute to
The Beatles by The Apples.

One of the bright spots of my day happens early in the morning listening to radio station 105.5 where Billy Steele and Wendell Miller host a morning show from 6:00 to 7:45. One of the more interesting topics of the show has come from Hugh Sweatt who calls in with the useless fact of the
day and the unword of the day. The useless fact is something that is true but has very little bearing on our lives and the unword is a word not yet found in Webster’s dictionary.

I want us to think for a moment about a fact and a word that can have a significant impact on our lives and is already found in the dictionary. That word is “ambassador.” According to Webster’s dictionary an ambassador is “a diplomatic agent of highest rank”. We are daily ambassadors for something; whether it is for God, family, business, etc. Over the next several weeks and months there will be many events happening in our community. Tourists from across the country and visitors from neighboring counties will be attending many of these events and activities. Let’s take the opportunity to be “a diplomatic agent of highest rank” for our community because WE BELIEVE in Muhlenberg County.

Sincerely,
David L.Richey President
A Message from the

We Believe in Muhlenberg County

Dear Fellow Chamber Members:

WE BELIEVE! Do we? Can we? Will we? The answer we give to these three questions will have a tremendous impact on future generations in our county. Your response to our “WE BELIEVE” campaign for the Kentucky NewGas air quality permit was overwhelming. Officials from both Peabody Energy and Conoco Phillips told me they had never seen such support at this type of hearing. Thanks again for your support, but we can’t stop and we didn’t. Thursday, February 4th a group of approximately 40 chamber members traveled to Frankfort to attend the West Kentucky
Thank You Night. This was our opportunity to be seen by the Governor, leaders of both legislative bodies, and to unite with other Western Kentuckians to show Frankfort there is more to our Commonwealth than just the golden triangle of Lexington, Louisville and Covington.

To date, I believe we have answered the questions at the beginning of this column with a resounding “YES WE BELIEVE”. We must continue to build momentum. I encourage everyone to become active in your chamber by attending monthly meetings, serving on committees, supporting special activities and last but certainly not least by BELIEVEING IN MUHLENBERG COUNTY.

I cannot close without saying a special thanks to Gary Carver for the wonderful job he did as chamber president. We appreciate your hard work and the leadership you provided last year.

Sincerely,
David Richey
President
